Original cast iron under a 1970s slab, replaced end to end. Everything you see here is buried again by the end of the week — which is exactly why it gets photographed.
Cast iron laid in the sixties and seventies does not fail all at once. It scales up, cracks, and separates at the joints, and by the time it backs up into the house the line has usually been failing for years.
On this one the run was trenched most of the way with a short tunnel under the slab. New pipe in, inspected, pressure and drainage checked with the homeowner present before a shovel of dirt went back.
The test of this work is not the day it passes inspection. It is the next ten years, which is why we run every fixture in the house before we backfill.
